Gombe Stream
in the presence of chimpanzees

On the wild shores of Lake Tanganyika, a fragile strip of forest shelters chimpanzee families made famous by the longest-running primate study in the world. An encounter here is a look across the narrowest of species barriers.

1960 · the longest study

Dr. Jane Goodall's Gombe

In 1960, a young Jane Goodall arrived on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and began a behavioral research program that would become the longest-running study of primates in the world. The matriarch Fifi, just three years old at the time, was the last surviving member of the original community – and is still regularly seen by visitors today.

the call of the forest

The pant‑hoot

An excited whoop erupts from deep in the forest, boosted by a dozen other voices, rising to a frenzied shrieking crescendo. It is the famous 'pant-hoot' call: a bonding ritual that allows chimpanzees to identify each other. To the human listener, it is a spine-chilling announcement that you are about to meet your closest genetic relative.

A morning with chimpanzees

Guided walks take you deep into the forest to observe and sit with extraordinary primates for an entire morning. You may see a flicker of understanding when you look into a chimp's eyes, assessing you in return – a look of apparent recognition across the narrowest of species barriers.

Beachcomber baboons · red colobus · 200 birds

A troop of olive baboons, under study since the 1960s, is exceptionally habituated. Red-tailed and red colobus monkeys (the latter hunted by chimps) stick to the canopy. Fish eagles, jewel-like Peter's twinspots, and 200 other bird species complete the symphony.

Lanterns on the water

After dusk, a dazzling night sky is complemented by the lanterns of hundreds of small wooden boats, bobbing on Lake Tanganyika like a sprawling city. Swimming and relaxing on the shore complete the day's adventure.
