Mahale Mountains
jungle peaks & sapphire lake

Silky white coves, sapphire waters, and wild jungle‑draped peaks towering 2 km above Lake Tanganyika — home to 900 chimpanzees, habituated by a Japanese research project since the 1960s.

A roadless wilderness

Set deep in the African interior, 128 km south of where Stanley uttered "Dr Livingstone, I presume". Traditionally inhabited by the Batongwe and Holoholo people — highly attuned to nature, living with no ecological impact. Officially declared a National Park in 1985.

A magical encounter

Habituated by a Japanese research project in the 1960s, Mahale’s chimpanzees are accustomed to human presence. Tracking them through the montane rainforest is an unforgettable experience — a window into our closest genetic relatives.
