Tarangire National Park
where elephants roam among baobabs

Some of the highest elephant densities in Tanzania, ancient baobab trees, and the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem — a dry‑season paradise.

sixth largest national park

2,850 km² of wilderness

Located 118 km (75 miles) southwest of Arusha, Tarangire is a popular stop on the northern safari circuit. An easy drive from Arusha or Lake Manyara on a surfaced road to within 7 km of the main entrance gate — and from there, you can continue to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.

Elephants & baobabs

Families of up to 300 elephants dig for underground streams in dry river beds. They play around ancient baobab trunks and strip acacia bark for their afternoon meal. Sparse vegetation, strewn with baobab and acacia, makes Tarangire uniquely beautiful.

Migratory herds

Before the rains, gazelles, wildebeests, zebras, and giraffes migrate to Tarangire’s scrub plains. They crowd shrinking lagoons — a smorgasbord for predators. It’s the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem.

Predators & climbers

Lions and leopards lounge in sausage tree branches, their tails disguised by hanging fruit. Pythons climb trees too. Dry‑country antelope like fringe‑eared oryx and gerenuk are regularly found here.

birdlife & endemics

From ostriches to lovebirds

Kori bustards (heaviest flying bird), ostriches (largest bird), and ground hornbills roam drier ground. Look for screeching flocks of dazzling yellow‑collared lovebirds, and the rufous‑tailed weaver and ashy starling — endemic to north‑central Tanzania’s dry savannah.

Termite mounds & duets

Disused termite mounds are frequented by colonies of endearing dwarf mongoose. Pairs of red‑and‑yellow barbet draw attention with their loud, clockwork‑like duetting — a soundtrack of the savannah.
