Swahili coast heritage

Pangani
where the river meets the ocean

At the mouth of the Pangani River, a town of crumbling elegance and living traditions. Historic slave markets, coral reefs, endangered green turtles, and the warm hospitality of the Swahili coast.

the place

A confluence of history

The Pangani River, born on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and Meru, here empties into the Indian Ocean. The town grew as a centre of Swahili trade with the African mainland. Today, it's a quiet backwater where German bomas, slave markets, and colonial houses whisper of layered pasts. Walk its streets, cross the river by ferry, and feel the rhythm of a coast that has welcomed traders, explorers, and dreamers for centuries.
