Mafia Island
where reefs reign
A world‑class diving sanctuary, some of the richest coral reefs on earth, sea turtles nesting on deserted beaches — Mafia is Tanzania’s best‑kept marine secret.
822 km² of pure biodiversity
Mafia Island Marine Park (MIMP) covers the southern part of the island and includes Chole, Juani, Jibondo, Bwejuu, and several uninhabited islets. More than 75% of the park lies below the high water mark — an outstanding mosaic of coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, and inter‑tidal flats.
World‑class diving
Mafia is renowned for some of the richest reefs in the world — Chole Bay, Kitutia Reef, and the untouched marine reserves. Manta rays, whale sharks (seasonal), and pristine corals await.
Sea turtles & coastal forest
Two species of sea turtle nest on Mafia’s beaches. The park also protects a remnant block of threatened lowland coastal forest along the eastern seaboard — half of it within the marine park boundary. A critical site for biodiversity.
Ruins of the past
Several sites of historic ruins lie within the marine park, some dating back to the 13th century. Explore Chole Island’s ancient remains, a testament to Mafia’s long role in Indian Ocean trade.
